Basketball

July 24th, 2008

This morning I played some pick up basketball games. I usually play every Tuesday and Thursday, it is a great workout for me because I love competition and I love the comrraderie that I have with the guy’s I play wih. We have a great time with each other, and we are getting in shape in the process. This morning when we went to the gym it was very hot. It reminded me of my soccer game this week that was extremely hot! I was sweating before we even started to play. We had several great games and we played for about an hour and a half. It was a great time and I probably losta lot more than I normally would have because of the heat. Just my luck to have 2 extremely hot workout sessions in the same week. I guess that is what happens when you live in the dessert.

Soccer Game

July 22nd, 2008

Last night I had an indoor soccer game and it had to be over 100 degrees in the building! We play in an old warehouse and we had a pretty early game so the sun was still blazing down on the all-metal building. It was 94 degrees outside, and it had to be much hotter inside. I could hardly breathe as I was running around and I probably drank a gallon of water. My wife is pregnant and it was so hot in the building she went out to the car and cooled off with the air conditioning. Although it was uncomfortable, it was probably one of the best weight loss workouts I have had in awhile. My shirt was drenched by the end of the game, but I felt really good! Plus, my team won the game. It was a great workout and probably very effective, but I wouldn’t mind it being a little cooler next game!

Weigh In

July 21st, 2008

I finally broke downa and bought a new scale. Weighing in wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for either. I am weighing in at 230 now, so I have dropped 5 pounds since I started this blog. I have heard that it is best to slowly lose the weight by changing your lifestyle. That is what I am trying to do and hopefully I will see better results in the long run. I have done the quick weight loss diets and they never seem to work. I lose a bunch of weight real quick and then once I am at my desired weight I ease up on what I was doing and before I realize what is going on, I am 50 pounds overweight again. SO it has been a slow process, but I am seeing results and I feel better. The scale we had before was so old it was probably inaccurate. All of my clothes are feeling better and I can tell I have lost weight in my face and torso, so I think I was heavier than I originally thought I was.

I will be able to keep you updated better on my weight loss now that I have a scale, it is even a fancy scale that will give me my body fat %. That was a shocker, I couldn’t believe how high my body fat % was! When I was in high school, albeit with a better metabolism, I had a body fat percentage of 8%. My body fat right now is at 30%, which is really unhealthy and makes me determined to lose the weight!

No More Pictures of That Fat Guy - 2

July 10th, 2008

So my wife took some more pictures the other day and I was pleased with  how they turned out. Yes, I wish I were not as heavy as I am now, but I am seeing results and that is rewarding. I went from hating every picture of me about a month ago to being okay with them now.  I have a ways to go, but I feel so much better about myself and I am so much happier than I was a month ago!

Diet

July 8th, 2008

It was dificult to pass up all of the sweets with the holiday weekend, but I am proud to say I did very well with my diet. I am not sure I have ever formally posted what diet I am on. That is because it is my special diet that I made up for myself. Basically all I try to do is eat healthy foods, pass up the sweets, no more sodas, and eat at the right times. It works well for me and I am seeing some success with it. I have found that when i am on a restrictive diet I end up torturing myself and dropping the diet after a few days. With this diet there are no foods I can and can’t eat so there is no torture. I am more conscious of what I eat and think about it beforehand rather than eating whatever is in front of me like I used to.

I still have not bought a scale so I do not have any weigh in results. I will keep you posted when i finally break down and weigh in. I know I am improving and I don’t need a scale to see that.

Workouts - Hope everyone had a great Independence Day!

July 8th, 2008

I have been going strong in the workout department. The only day that I did not work out last week was the 4th of July. I did help set up flags throughout my neighborhood that morning and I guess that could work as a workout. Also, we had a family party and my nieces and nephews decided to throw water balloons and cups of water at me. So I did some running there to get away from them. It may not have been an organized workout, but I probably got enough in for it to be effective. We also played volleyball at the party, I know I am losing weight and feeling better about myself because I always want to be doing something active. It is great to have the desire to workout and be active again. I have always been like that and I love that I am getting that drive back.

I am also going to be playing on 2 soccer teams for the next couple of weeks. They needed some players to fill in and I couldn’t pass it up. It will be good to play 2 times a week because it is such a great workout. I always feel so good after my games, even though I am completely exhausted. Plus we play in these old warehouses and the are extremely hot in the summer, so I probably have been losing even more because of that. It is a fun activity and I love working out when sports are involved.

Always remember to get enough water while working out in the summer! My sister-in-law had edema this last weekend because she was out in the sun too much and didn’t drink enough water. Be careful while you are dropping the pounds!

Progress Update

July 2nd, 2008

I am sorry that it has been awhile since my last post. I am doing great, working out every morning and eating healthy. It has been three weeks in a row where I have worked out every single morning, but sunday. I am starting to see results and feel better about my body. I still have not rplaced my scale, and I am not sure if I am going to. That does not mean I am not going to weigh in anymore, I just will not be weighing in every day. I want to see how it is goes, but for now I feel like I have made a lot of progress and I haven’t stepped on a scale for over a week. My clothes are fitting better and I feel like I am losing the weight finally. I have noticed that my shirts are getting looser in the neck, chest and stomach. Shirts that were not fitting very well a month ago fit a lot better now.

I have also noticed that I am getting my jawline back. Some of you may question what that means, we ll I have lost some weight in my face and I can see my jaw again. For a little bit there I had so much fat in my cheeks and neck, I could not see my jawline.

My amazing wife has also noticed a difference and continues to motivate me to workout and eat healthy. She is the best and it helps to have some one there to constantly motivate me.

I still have a long road to go, but I am making progress and I am enjoying my morning workouts. It has been awhile since I could say I am enjoying my workouts, but it feels good to get up early and go work out. I feel better all day and I am more productive at work.

I am hesitant to do a weigh in because I feel better and I feel I am seeing the results. I would hate to weigh in and not see a difference in the scale and lose all motivation that I have going right now. On the other hand the curiosity is killing me and I want to see if I am really dropping the pounds. I think I am seeing enough results that even if the pounds aren’t coming off I know my body is changing and eventually the pounds will drop. I will probably weigh in sometime this week and let you know how it goes.

Here is some added motivation that I may need to use to help me out.

Diet Pills

June 25th, 2008

There are so many different diet pills and diet supplements that it can be hard to decide which ones are good and which ones won’t do a thing for you. I have not taken any diet pills and I am not sure if I will. I am sure they work for some people, but I would rather try and work off my excess weight through working out and eating right. The thing I worry about with Diet pills is that they are a temporary fix, to really solve the problem you need to change your lifestyle.

I am not saying that diet pills are not good for you, but I would rather change the way I live first. If that does not work than I may try a diet pill. Have any of you used diet pills? I am not talking about vitamin pills and nutrient pills and stuff like that, I am talking more about the “expanding” pills that make you eat less.

The one pill that is the latest craze is Alli, I am going to look into Alli a little more and I will let you know what I find.

Weigh In

June 25th, 2008

Our scale broke and I have not been able to weigh in. I will weigh inat the gym soon and update everyone on how I am doing. Before the scale broke I was down to 232 so I have lost 3 pounds so far. I am feeling better about myself already. It is amazing how much more productive I am during the day when i work out, than when I don’t. I get a lot more done and I feel better about myself at the end of the day. Although the weight isn’t coming off as quickly as I would like, my clothes are fitting better and I feel better about my image. I will keep you posted more frequently on the weight loss when I get a new scale, until then I will weigh in at the gym as often as possible.

New Scale

June 25th, 2008

Our scale broke last week (insert fat joke here), and I need to replace it. I am not sure what happened to it, I just replaced the batteries and it was working fine. It is an older scale so I have been wanting a new one anyway. I found a couple of scales that I like, but there are so many features that I am not sure which one I should choose. The scale I had was very basic and didn’t measure anything, but weight.

Here are a few scales that I am considering:

Superior Talking Scale Superior Talking Scale

You’ll have to hear this to believe it!

The European Physician's Large Platform Scale. The European Physician’s Large Platform Scale.

With an extra-wide 12″ platform with textured dimpled foot pads for sure footing, this scale is designed by a 60 year-old award-winning company from France and is the same one preferred by medical professionals in Europe. The easy-to-read 8″-diam. dial is easy to view and displays weight in pounds and kilograms. The scale’s brushed all-metal body and heavy-duty spring components support 400 lbs. 19 1/2″ L x 12 1/4″ W x 5 1/4″ H. (15 lbs.)

The Digital Weight And Body Composition Scale. The Digital Weight And Body Composition Scale.

This is the digital scale that supports your health and fitness regimen by quickly and accurately measuring key body composition data in addition to precise weight readings. Unlike other measuring methods that require expensive, specialized equipment or submersion in water, the scale uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) (a harmless electrical impulse) to calculate body fat percentage, muscle mass, and body water within seconds after you step on the 12 3/4 x 13 3/4″ glass platform. Three modes (normal, child, and athlete) let you adjust the scale’s sensitivity for greatest accuracy, and it estimates the daily caloric intake needed to maintain your current body composition. The scale can store data for up to 10 individuals, making it easy to track the entire family’s progress. The 2″ high LCD panel features a dual-line readout that displays weight and body composition results simultaneously in bright 3/4″ high numerals. The scale has a 400 lb. (180 kg) capacity and displays weights in 1/4-lb. (0.1 kg) increments. Four AAA batteries (included) provide convenient cordless operation. 14 1/2″ W x 13 3/4″ L x 3″ D. (4 lbs.)

I may get crazy and get one of these cool scales:

The Best Physician's Beam Scale. The Best Physician’s Beam Scale.

This beam scale proved to be the best in tests by the Hammacher Schlemmer Institute because it is consistently the most accurate. An independent industrial weighing systems company was commissioned to calibrate the scales prior to testing and this beam scale was the most precise, only deviating from the actual weight by 0.35% on average, unlike lesser models with inaccuracy rates up to 1.2% (2 lbs. for a 180-lb. person). Scoring highest for consistency, the scale was the only one that recorded three spot-on measurements of seven different weights, while the unit that placed second failed to record even one exact measurement. The scale has a 500-lb. capacity and measures in 1/4-lb. increments, the poise bar rotates to show measurements in Imperial or metric, a 24″ to 84″ height rod slides out of the unit to allow simultaneous height and weight measurements, and the engraved markings are easy to read. The scale is made from heavy-duty steel and assembles in 10 minutes. 57 1/4″ H x 10 2/3″ W x 20 1/2″ L (39 lbs.)

I will keep you posted on what scale I choose and how it works for me, until I get this scale I will be weighing in at the gym. I will try to weigh in soon and post the results. I did weigh in on Monday, before the scale broke, and I was at 232. I have lost 3 pounds so far! I am feeling better and I feel like I have more energy as I work out more and eat better.
